Direct Drive Screw Compressors
Direct Drive Screw Compressors
Direct drive screw compressors are compressor units where the electric motor has a direct transmission of torque to the screw pair using a coupling or rigid connection, hence without belts.
Which is better - direct drive or belt drive compressor?
The main disadvantage of using a pulley is its stretching, which leads to slipping, resulting in loss of power and efficiency of the entire compressor unit, and in some cases the appearance of additional vibrations and noise. With belt drive, constant monitoring of the correct tension of the belt is necessary. Unfortunately, this is often ignored, or there is simply no personnel for regular maintenance to properly tension the pulley. There are also many belts made from low-quality materials on the market, which stretch very quickly, complicating work.
Compressors with direct drive are better because they are easier to maintain. To compensate for a slight misalignment between the engine shaft and the drive rotor of the screw block, steel jaw couplings with an elastic star are used. High-quality flexible couplings are expensive, but they last much longer than a belt and do not require regular supervision.
A variety of direct drive compressors includes models with rigid shaft connections. During assembly, they were centred by the manufacturer so that the shafts are safely connected directly to each other.
Overview of Direct Drive Screw Compressor Model SCC-ZA
We offer to watch our video review on the compressor with a coupling drive connection using the example of a ready-to-work assembly from the SCC-ZA series. A similar construction principle is used in other Specialist single-stage air compression units.
Is it worth getting a direct drive compressor?
Yes, it is worth choosing a compressor with direct drive, allowing you to spend less time on maintenance for checking and adjusting belt tension.
