Industrial vacuum suction cups in bellows shape with folds allow manipulators to grip objects with convex and sloped surfaces, sheets positioned at an angle. The most versatile is the so-called "low" bellows suction cup — having 1.5 convolutions on its cup, which enhance its flexibility while maintaining stiffness — resulting in sufficient suction power and reliability for lifting heavy metal items. Higher convoluted heads offer maximum flexibility and can provide gentler contact, though they lose accuracy and the ability to hold larger loads.
Flat Suction Cups
A flat suction cup shape without bends provides the highest rigidity — vacuum manipulators with such suction cups are often used for holding large metal sheets and glass, ceramic tiles, smooth wood, and other objects with an even surface and significant weight. Regular round suction cups can ensure more precise positioning in the production line but are not suited for sticking to uneven surfaces.
Selecting the Material for Vacuum Suction Cups
Vacuum suction cups are made from various elastomers, considering necessary stiffness and elasticity, as well as operational temperature, potential chemical exposure, and even lighting:
Nitrile Rubber (NBR) is the most popular for making vacuum suction cups. It offers optimal price-performance: wear resistance, resistance to mineral oils, and operating temperatures approximately from -20 to 120 °C.
Silicone is less wear-resistant, but silicone suction cups are very elastic and withstand a wide temperature range — approximately from -60 to 200 °C.
Polyurethane (PU) makes suction cups more powerful and reliable than NBR rubber — it is stronger, withstands larger loads and deformations, and better resists abrasion on rough and abrasive surfaces.
Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM) is used in outdoor environments because it is resistant to UV and ozone. It is also used for resistance to alkalis and acids.
Viton (FKM) is chosen for extreme conditions when working with aggressive chemicals.
Under normal working conditions (in a clean workshop), NBR rubber suction cups are used as the cheapest option and only depending on specific conditions may other materials be selected. Exact rubber properties will depend on the manufacturer, so it's better to choose trusted and reliable suppliers.
Adapters and Mounting Parts for Vacuum Suction Cups
Aluminium and bronze adapters with threads (nipples) allow attaching the suction cup to a vacuum ejector or screwing them into a plate or shaft for group mounting, which they are retained by.
In some cases, spring plungers are used — fittings that act as fasteners and buffers to absorb suction cup shocks. The anti-rotation type of plunger prevents turning and ensures precise positioning in CNC machines.
