Materials for Stainless Steel Butterfly Valves

Grades of Stainless Steel for Butterfly Valves

Depending on the pipeline fitting manufacturer, various stainless steel grades can be used, indicating minor differences in their composition and manufacturing method (forging or casting). Generally, they can be divided into those containing molybdenum and those without.

Introducing 2~3% molybdenum (Mo) into the alloy makes the steel more resistant to corrosion in aggressive environments such as seawater and chloride solutions. SS316 stainless steel valves are more in demand in Ukraine, as water for domestic and industrial use is often treated with chlorine.

Sealing for Stainless Steel Butterfly Valves

The type of rubber inserts is selected based on temperature and a table of chemical compatibility with the working medium. We offer the following types of seals:

EPDM is a non-toxic synthetic rubber resistant to many acids, alkalis, ozone, alcohols, and steam. Suitable for temperatures from −30 to 95° C.
PTFE also known as Teflon, has a temperature range from −40 to 160° C. Resistant to almost all oxidants, acids, and alkali solutions (except sodium and potassium alkalis).
NBR (on order) is a relatively inexpensive material for low temperatures from −20 to 80° C, resistant to hydrocarbons (oils, petroleum products), non-aggressive working media.
VITON (on order) for temperatures from −20 to 200° C. Has high chemical resistance to acids, alkalis, oxidizers, hydrocarbons.

After selecting the material based on theoretical data, we recommend additionally testing the actual resistance of rubber seals experimentally. This is especially relevant for aggressive environments. You can also consult with our managers before purchase.

Main Characteristics of Stainless Steel Butterfly Valves

DN (Nominal Diameter) in millimetres, chosen during the pipeline design stage. If you are purchasing a valve, you need to know the pipe diameter where it will be installed.

PN (Nominal Pressure in bar), which the butterfly valve can withstand.
