Choosing a Frequency Inverter for a 1.5 kW Motor

As we wrote in our article, when choosing a frequency inverter, you should consider not only the 1.5 kW motor's rated power but also the starting current. For instance, when considering a pump with a large impeller, its weight may lead to increased inertia on the shaft, reduced motor torque, and increased starting current. In such cases, you might need a more powerful inverter—the next in the standard series is 2.2 kW.

Once you've decided on the power, you can immediately narrow your choice by input and output voltage. You might have a single option already and can review its functionality description before purchasing.

If you have an industrial power source 3 phases 380 V and you are selecting a frequency inverter for a 1.5 kW three-phase motor, you'll have several options. In this case, primarily consider whether you need precise vector control of the motor. A 1.5 kW vector inverter should be used:

• when stringent control precision is required
• with simultaneously high inertia and short acceleration and braking times;
• when an increased frequency of starts and stops is necessary;
• to maintain motor torque.

For small pumps and fans, you can likely choose more affordable scalar frequency inverters 1.5 kW.
