Choosing between CFM210 and NL1000 frequency converters: comparison and reviews

In industry, where equipment reliability plays a crucial role, choosing a frequency converter becomes an important decision. In this article, we review two popular devices: CFM210 and NL1000, examining their advantages and disadvantages based on feedback from Specialist customers who have tested both frequency converters at their facilities. Their functionality is very similar, making them direct equivalents from different manufacturers.

Overview of CFM210 frequency converters (NL1000 equivalent)

The features and price of the CFM210 have made it quite popular, but a number of significant drawbacks of the model can be identified:

  1. Low reliability. According to feedback, CFM210 frequency converters are prone to failures. In particular, a customer with 45 devices of this series reported regular support requests over a period of 1.5 years. Some devices required repairs 2-3 times.
    • Overheating issues. During hot Ukrainian summers, the cooling fans of CFM210 frequency converters fail quickly, which reduces the overall reliability of the device.
    • Vulnerability to unstable power supply. IGBT modules of the CFM210 are often damaged by relatively small voltage fluctuations.
  2. No built-in ModBus interface. When a ModBus adapter is installed, the status indicators and control buttons are disabled, and the module must be purchased separately.
  3. Limited functionality. There are few settings, a limited number of inputs/outputs, and a narrow power range, which makes universal use more difficult.

Features of NL1000 frequency converters

Specialist not only directly imports NL1000 frequency converters from Nietz (China), but is also an official service center in Ukraine. NL1000 demonstrates a number of significant advantages over competitors, including CFM210. This is due to well-established manufacturing focused on producing products for the European market that meet higher EU standards, including EMC requirements and industrial machine safety requirements. In addition, NL1000 converters use more modern microprocessors, which has expanded their capabilities for configuring and monitoring motor protection parameters.

Key advantages of NL1000 over CFM210:

  1. Versatility and extended settings. NL1000 allows flexible parameter configuration for solving complex automation tasks. Built-in ModBus support and the ability to connect CAN and ProFiBUS make it a more versatile solution.
  2. Higher quality. NL1000 has a low failure rate – less than 1% of approximately 5,000 devices sold in 2024. Of these, 80% of failures were caused by incorrect connections and contamination (frequency converters and other IP20 devices should be installed in a cabinet at factories; otherwise, moisture and harmful substances can penetrate inside, causing oxidation, short circuits, and other negative consequences).
  3. Reliability under any conditions. Nietz frequency converters operate successfully under unstable power supply conditions without losing performance. They withstand both hot environments and cold unheated workshops (-10 ℃… 40 ℃).
  4. Convenience and ease of operation. The NL1000 frequency converter features compact component placement inside the housing, with good airflow and cooling of the electronics. DIN-rail mounting allows it to be installed in a cabinet for frequency converters. You can purchase an additional control panel for the frequency converter and mount it on the front panel of the motor control cabinet. Configuration is simple and intuitive thanks to the instruction manual.

Specialist provides a full range of service support: assistance with selection and configuration, as well as repair of frequency converters. This provides customers not only with convenience when purchasing, but also with confidence in the reliability of the equipment.

Feedback from users who switched to NL1000

We received exclusively positive feedback from customers who were offered the opportunity to test NL1000 as a replacement for CFM210. All settings were easily transferred, and the frequency converters successfully operated for about a year at the facilities.

Conclusion of the NL1000 vs CFM210 comparison

Among competitors, Ukrainian suppliers Specialist and AC privod offer their own service, which is an advantage of both companies. However, among the frequency converters with V/F control, the Nietz NL1000 series is a versatile solution and offers a strong combination of quality and price, with extensive functionality and high build quality. CFM210 is somewhat inferior in terms of durability, may not handle more complex motor control algorithms with sensors, and requires additional costs to connect to a ModBus system.

We guarantee that NL1000 can freely replace CFM210 and minimize the risk of failures and downtime associated with repairs. This is especially relevant for critical industrial projects.

We also offer 11 other series of frequency converters with power ratings from 0.2 to 350 kW. They support operation with vector and synchronous motors, and there are specialized frequency converters for pumps, lifting cranes, and single-phase motors.
